What you get

  1. Your calendar, as a PDF

A printable wall chart for your ZIP code: frost dates, then when to start, plant and harvest each crop, with every source on page 2.

  2. Start seeds indoors

A reminder a few days before the indoor seed-starting window opens for tomatoes, peppers and the other crops on your calendar.

  3. Harden off and transplant

A heads-up two weeks before each transplant date to start hardening off your seedlings, then again when the window opens.

  4. Frost and fall planting

Your typical last spring frost, the first fall frost, fall planting windows and the last day to plant for a fall harvest.

Frost alerts: common questions

How often will you email me?

Only when something on your calendar is coming up, a few days ahead. That is at most one email in any six days, often several weeks apart, and nothing in quiet months.

Where do the dates come from?

The same place as the calendar on this site: frost dates from NOAA 1991-2020 climate normals at the weather station nearest your ZIP code, and planting rules from university extension services. Each email names its source.

Are these frost forecasts?

No. They are long-term averages, so a frost can still come later in spring or earlier in fall. Check your local forecast before planting tender crops.

What do you store?

Your email address, your ZIP code, when and where you signed up, and which reminders we have sent you. Nothing else, and we never share or sell it.

Can I change my ZIP code or stop the emails?

Yes. Every email has a link to change your ZIP code or unsubscribe with one click.

Does it cost anything?

No. The alerts and the PDF calendar are free.
